EYFS Outdoor Learning & Provision - Our Classroom Under the Sky
Key Reasons Why Outdoor Provision Matters in EYFS
- Physical Development and Health - Outdoors offers space for big, energetic movements like running, climbing, jumping, balancing, and digging activities that build gross motor skills, core-strength, coordination, balance and agility, more effectively than indoors. It supports overall fitness, bone development, immune system strength (through fresh air and sunlight), better sleep, and reduced risk of issues like obesity. Children naturally engage in vigorous play on a larger scale, which is harder to replicate inside.
- Cognitive and Learning Benefits - Outdoor environments spark curiosity, problem-solving, creativity, and imagination through hands-on exploration of natural elements (eg. mud, leaves, insects, water). This leads to deeper understanding of the world, science concepts, seasons, and cause-and-effect. Research links more outdoor time in early school life to better attention, memory, and even long-term academic outcomes. It also supports characteristics of effective learning like engagement, motivation, and active exploration.
- Social, Emotional, and Mental Wellbeing - Free play outdoors encourages social interaction, collaboration, turn-taking, and friendship-building on a bigger scale. It promotes resilience, risk-taking (in a managed way), independence, self-esteem and confidence. Being surrounded by nature reduces stress, improves mood and supports emotional regulation - benefits especially valuable for young children's mental health.
- Connection to Nature and Broader Development - Regular outdoor experiences foster environmental awareness, sensory development, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. This ties directly into EYFS areas like 'Understanding the World' and helps children develop a sense of responsibility and stewardship.
